Beatriz Zamora: El Negro (The Black). Museo de la Ciudad de México

The Museo de la Ciudad de México presents “El Negro de Beatriz Zamora,” a retrospective exhibition with more than four decades dedicated to exploring the philosophical and spiritual depth of the color black; Zamora invites visitors to immerse themselves in a journey where this color transcends its visual character to become a transcendental experience. The exhibition will be on view until March 30, 2025.
The exhibition is comprised of 94 works in which Zamora used various materials of natural or mineral origin, such as charcoal, obsidian, mud, and semi-precious stones, which create different shades and textures of black, such as velvety, soft, metallic, or crystalline. This body of work celebrates Zamora’s artistic depth and invites us to reflect on the relationship between the human being and the cosmos, exploring the multiplicity of meanings that black can reveal.
“I am Beatriz Zamora and all that has guided me in life is the cosmic essence, the truth, and that is all I am,” said the Mexican artist born in 1935. The artist said that one day, she realized that “she was the owner of black, of all black, not just a little piece of it, so she went out into the street to shout to everyone that black belongs to Mexico. I had better start working with all the knowledge that the black itself gave me.
I hope that the work gives you something. It has been a work made for everyone; it has not been to sell because something like this can’t be sold, but that did not matter; it was for Mexico, it was for everyone, and that is what I have worked for. I give it to you.”
“The love of work, the love of humanity, the love of life is priceless and is the only thing I have worked for; I have done the best I could, and it has been for everyone,” said Zamora.
Beatriz Zamora, born in Mexico City, is a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene. She started in 1952 by learning from the muralist José Hernández Delgadillo and continued her training at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1972. Zamora has challenged artistic conventions with her unique approach and, since 1977, devoted herself exclusively to using the color black.
Beatriz Zamora has faced significant challenges throughout her career, including ostracism and self-exile in New York in 1980. However, her work has been recognized internationally, with more than 100 solo and 250 group exhibitions and numerous awards such as the Legion of Honor Medal from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1977 and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship in 2002.
