Beatriz Milhazes presents Maresias at Turner Contemporary

Turner Contemporary presents Maresias an exhibition by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes (1960, Rio de Janeiro) until September 10, 2023. Milhazes is recognized as one of today's outstanding abstract artists.
This is the artist's first institutional exhibition in the UK in over two decades. The exhibition brings together 20 paintings and 5 works on paper from 1989 to the present day, to give an account of Milhazes' different approaches to her artistic practice over the last 4 decades. In addition, a major installation is presented at Sunley Gallery Window.
Milhazes' work emerged in the 1980s as part of the Geração Oitenta (Generation of the 80s) movement, which moved away from the conceptual and focused on painting as a form of energy and expression. Today, Milhazes is known for her large-scale, intensely colorful abstract canvases that materialize tensions, spontaneity, and layered, lined surfaces.
This exhibition at Turner Contemporary features a new strand of the institution's program dedicated to contemporary ecological issues. Through this, the artist reflects on our relationship with the environment.
