Beatriz Milhazes: Avenida Paulista is the most extensive retrospective of the Brazilian artist to date, conceived for two simultaneous spaces, The MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand) and Itaú Cultural. They will be open until May 30, 2021.
The curatorial discourse focuses on the years between 1989 and 2020, with around 170 works. At the MASP, Avenida Paulista, commissioned for the exhibition, will be presented along with ten works shown to the public for the first time. At the Itaú Cultural, the exhibition spans three floors, with 79 works, three of them never exhibited: Havaí em amarelo vibrante (Bright Yellow Hawaii), Cor de pele (Skin Color), and Giro horizontal (Horizontal Turn). A short documentary about the artist's work, created by the Itaú Literature and Audiovisual Cultural Center, will also be presented.
The exhibition at the MASP was organized in the framework dedicated to Dance History, which was designed for one year. For this reason, works made in collaboration with the choreographer Marcia Milhazes will be shown. Due to the pandemic, the Márcia Milhazes company's dance performances, scheduled for 2020, had to be postponed and held in 2021.
Curated by Ivo Mesquita (Independent Curator) at Itaú Cultural, it will feature engravings, collages, and acrylics. At MASP, curators Adriano Pedrosa (Artistic Director, MASP) and Amanda Carneiro (assistant-curator, MASP) brought together small and large-scale paintings, as well as sculptures and drawings. The exhibition has a catalog with reproductions of the works presented and essays on the artist's work.
