Beatriz González Retrospective 1948 - 2010

Colombia
The Museo de Arte Moderno in Medellín presents a chronological retrospective (1948¿2011) by Beatríz González. The exhibition stems from the Museum¿s curatorial mandate to establish a yearly space whose objective is to showcase Colombian artists and to recognize their artistic contributions to the art of Colombia. Entitled Beatríz González. Comedy and Tragedy. Retrosective 1948¿2010, the exhibition curated by Alberto Sierra and Julián Posada, is divided into four thematic centers that mark the work by González. Visitors will find close to 200 artwork¿objects, paintings, drawings, and sculptures¿in the exhibition rooms of the museum that attest to the artist¿s beginnings, her discovery of the photographic camera, her interest in the political and social direction of her country. González¿s work gives new meaning to images and contents that belong to the pictorial field and questions the manner in which reality is constructed through representation. Her work fluctuates between humor and drama, irony and tragedy, as it is driven by the history and reality of Colombia. The exhibition will remain open until March of 2012. It will be complemented by a wide-ranging academic and cultural program aimed at drawing the interest of several publics to González¿s work. In the context of these activities, it is noteworthy to point the presence of prominent personalities from the curatorial and art criticism world like Ivo Mesquita and Venezuelan Luis Pérez-Oramas (Latin American Art Curator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), among other guest who have been invited to discuss the work by Beatríz González. These activities are scheduled for the 22nd and 23rd of February.
