MACBA’s Director Bartomeu Marí Resigns

Following the controversial cancellation of the exhibition titled "The Beast and the Sovereign: Thirty-one Artists Destroy the Logic of Power," the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (MACBA), Bartomeu Marí, decided to resign his post as director of that cultural institution. The exhibition, co-produced by Württemberg Kunstverein in Stuttgart (WKV), included Haute couture 04 Transport (Not Dressed for Conquering) by Ines Doujak and John Barker, the piece at the center of the controversy. The sculpture depicts former king Juan Carlos I of Spain being sodomized by the late Bolivian union leader Domitila Barrios, who is in turn being sodomized by a dog. Marí's decision to cancel the exhibition, after the curators in charge of it refused to withdraw the piece, was widely criticized, especially by curators and by MACBA's head of Public Programs, Paul Beatriz Preciado and head curator Valentín Roma who, according to a report by Europa Press "criticized Marí's authoritarianism and asked for an open debate about public institutions and their oligarchical structures." The wide-spread outrage and criticism that sparked Marí's decision led the director to write a letter in which he backtracked and announced that the exhibition would open on March 21. After this, the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona accepted Bartomeu Marí's letter of resignation and fired curators Paul Beatriz Preciado and Valentín Roma, who have been part of the Museum's curatorial team for a little over a year, after the resignation of curator Carles Guerra. For the time being Marí will continue to serve as director for a few more months while the manager of the museum, Joan Abellá, is confirmed to step in temporarily. The museum will officially announce the search for a new director in the near future.
