On April 11th Espaço ARTRA opened in São Paulo, Brazil, under the direction of art dealer Anita Kuczynski and entrepreneur Shannon Chang.
To commemorate the three years since Nelson Leirner’s passing (1932-2020), ARTRA began its activities with the exhibition Nelson Leirner: By Another Logic, which includes a selection of the artist’s main works produced between the 1960s and 2010s. “Homenagem to Fontana” and “Você faz parte” (from the 1960s) are featured, in addition to less-known works, such as drawings from the series “Uma Linha Dura... Não Dura” (1970s), among others.
“As an artist and teacher, Leirner was certain that art should not remain tied to individual subjectivity. He urged everyone to feel included, not just in the game of art, but in the game of life. ARTRA is certain that, by placing Leirner’s works in close contact with the public in the artist’s hometown, it pays due homage to the man who is an icon of contemporary art in Brazil,” explains Tadeu Chiarelli in the exhibition essay.
