Contemporary Uruguayan Artists

The exhibition Contemporary Uruguayan Artists is now open to the public at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Cultural Center, in Washington, D.C. The show is a tribute to Uruguay and its capital city, Montevideo, which will host the 53rd Annual IDB Governor's Meeting.

The show encompasses paintings, prints, sculptures, mixed technique works, and photography by 13 contemporary artists working at a critical juncture in Uruguayan history. While each work stands out as an individual artistic expression, as a group they reflect a common history and tradition, as well as the trends that are transforming the country's cultural and artistic scene.

Contemporary Uruguayan Artists is part of About Change: Art from Latin America and the Caribbean, a project conceived by the World Bank Arts Program and launched as a collaboration between the IDB Cultural Center and AMA / Art Museum of the Americas, of the Organization of American States. The initiative includes a series of exhibitions of Latin American and Caribbean art offered in a variety of spaces in Washington, D. C. in 2011 and 2012.

Included in the exhibition are Santiago Aldabalde; Ana Campanella; Muriel Cardoso; a group formed by Gerardo Carella, Federico Meneses, and Ernesto Rizzo; Jacqueline Lacasa; Gabriel Lema; Daniel Machado; Cecilia Mattos; Diego Velazco; Santiago Velazco; and Diego Villalba.

Marina Galvani, curator of the World Bank Arts Program, describes the way in which these works speak about contemporary topics: "Like the rest of Latin America, Uruguay has reasons to celebrate its role in the global economy, which even shows signs of growing reverse immigration."

The exhibition will remain open through June 1st, 2012, at the IDB Cultural Center, 1300 York Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20577.
