Kay Pacha: Reciprocity with the Natural World is an exhibition curated by Dr. Traci Andren, professor at the Department of Anthropology of the University of Miami. The curatorship associated with the ancient art from the Andes is based on the Lowe Art Museum's permanent collection. It consists of more than one thousand pieces created with stone, metal, wood, ceramic and textiles, from the Andean regions of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. The exhibition recreates the ancient Andean's concept of reciprocity between human begins and nature. The pieces selected for the exhibition reflect such relationships and express the ancient Andean inhabitants' feelings of appreciation, fear and debt towards the natural world. The show also conveys the opulent materials used to create many of the objects and their close relationship with a natural world both lush and mysterious. A series of activities will be organized concurrently with the exhibition, including: a lecture on February 18 by Dr. Richard Burger, Charles J. McCurdy Professor of Anthropology at Yale University, about Violence, Warfare, and Religion in the Emergence of Early Peruvian Civilization; a Symposium about the exhibition on February 20; a family day organized on February 21 dedicated to the theme of the exhibition; and, on February 24, a lecture by Dr. Benjamin Orlove of Columbia University Center for Research on Environmental Decisions, Bodies, Objects, and Power in Andean Landscapes.
