Art Brut: In the Intimacy of a Collection

The Grand Palais presents an interesting exhibition based on the exceptional collection of Bruno Decharme, the culmination of 45 years of research and collecting art brut. The exhibition brings together over 300 works that reveal the power of creativity outside established frameworks.

Art brut is a term coined by Jean Dubuffet in 1945 and refers to art created by individuals with no formal academic training, outside the traditional art circuit, and with limited cultural knowledge who work spontaneously.

During the opening, the presence and performance of Cuban artist Daldo Marte (1982) stood out, who, with his characteristic superhero costume— cap and mask included — accompanied by other works, gave testimony to the expressive richness of this type of art. "The costume," explained Marte, "was a way of expressing emotions because words don't come to me; they don't come as naturally to me sometimes as they do to other people. So, it's an artistic, performative way of expressing what I felt inside my being."

The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, is conceived as a jigsaw puzzle reflecting the kaleidoscope of themes and points of view brought together by the show's curators.
