Andrew Roberts Cadáver fantasma (Spectral Corpse)

The exhibition Cadáver fantasma (Spectral Corpse) by Andrew Roberts (Tijuana, 1995) will be presented at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City until November 30, 2025.

Cadáver fantasma (Spectral Corpse) is based on an investigation of popular culture references in the socio-political context of 2006, when the “war on drugs” began. It also considers Roberts' experience growing up in Tijuana in the first decade of this millennium. Using albums such as The Black Parade by the band My Chemical Romance and references to the PlayStation 3, the pieces in this exhibition contrast the generational sensibility and its relationship with violence and the ways in which death is understood today. First, associating it with a material sense such as the body or the living dead; second, relating it to what happens without (physically) existing.

The artist invites the viewer to become a video game avatar and to examine the skin and geometric meshes of an .OBJ file. Also, to distinguish between the hands that take control of a video game and how to perceive the feet when moving forward in an unknown space. This suggests questions on the notions of reality, the possibilities of the digital world, its impact on our bodies, and how there will be a hybrid world where the tangible and the virtual merge.

The show features a video installation made specifically for the MUAC, in which the artist creates a fictionalization of a zombie apocalypse in the year 2006. In this particular work there is an approach to youth and adolescence that is related to merchandise and identity.
