Ana Mendieta: En búsqueda del origen (Search for Origin) at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León

The exhibition "En búsqueda del origen" (Search for Origin) is the largest monographic show of Cuban artist Ana Mendieta in Spain. It will be open to the public until May 19 at the Castilla y Leon Museum of Contemporary Art. The project features about a hundred works in different media: videos, sculptures, photographs, installations, drawings and paintings, produced between 1968 and 1985.
The museum organized the show in eight sections that invite the viewer to explore the relevance of the artist's work today. Between the 1970s and the 1980s, Mendieta created a group of works that addressed the body and its encounter with nature, in aspects such as body art and land art. She used the term "earth body" to explain her practice that included her figure, as a silhouette, in the landscape.
The exhibition focuses on Mendieta as an artist who never stopped reinventing herself, developing sculptural and performative forms, investigating myths and exploring rock art. Likewise, different relationships are established between dichotomies such as the visible and the invisible, the permanent and the ephemeral, through the use of her body and nature. Inspired by the exile she lived at twelve years old when she left Cuba due to the revolution led by Fidel Castro.
