The MoMA Board of Trustees has recently approved an expansion project for the museum's building in central Manhattan, which will result in 3,700 square meters of new galleries and pubic areas.
The project, by the Diller Scofidio + Renfro architecture studio, includes tearing down the former American Folk Arts Museum. Over the past six months, a "long and rigorous" analysis has reached the conclusion that replacing this museum "is the only way to achieve the complete integration of the campus", according to a press release by MoMA director Glenn Lowry.
The expansion will integrate the current facilities with the AFAM and the three lower floors of a giant 82-level tower to be built to is side. Construction for the tower is slated to begin later this year.
