Alfredo Jaar received the 11th Hiroshima Art Prize Exhibition

From July 22 to October 15, 2023, Alfredo Jaar's show will be on view at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, in Japan. The exhibition was scheduled for the summer of 2020, but was postponed due to COVID-19 and the renovation of the museum.
The Hiroshima MOCA was founded in 1989 in the city of Hiroshima, the site of the first atomic bombing in human history. The Hiroshima Art Prize is aimed at reminding the world of the "Spirit of Hiroshima" in search of world peace through contemporary art. The prize is awarded every three years and in this edition the winner was the Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar.
Alfredo Jaar (1956, Santiago de Chile) began to be recognized in the 1980s for his work that featured photography, light boxes, installations and projects in public space. Jaar has adopted a journalistic perspective, investigating historical events, social inequities and various social and political events.
In 1995 the artist created the piece After Hiroshima Special Exhibition for the 50th Anniversary of the Hiroshima A-bombing, which was presented at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. Years later, in 2013, he created several works based on his research on the earthquake that occurred in eastern Japan and, subsequently, on the Fukushima nuclear accident.
This exhibition is Jaar's first retrospective exhibition in Japan, it aims to show several periods of his career, some of his most important works and, of course, the pieces that address Hiroshima as the main focus.
