Alfredo Jaar refers to himself as "The Chilean-born, New York-based architect who makes art." He has been recognized as one of the most complex artists to address cultural, political and social issues in his work. On this event, he will present "One Million German Passports" from March 29 through August 27, 2023 at the Pinakothek der Moderne.
Through silent and meditative works, Jaar exposes from military conflicts and political corruption to economic inequalities in different parts of the world, giving relevance to the ethics of representation.
For this exhibition, in response to the current global context, he investigates the invasion in Ukraine and the migration policies in Europe, including the debate on citizenship in Germany. Jaar constructed an installation that consists of one million German passports behind security glass.
On one hand, this number refers to the amount of people that former Chancellor Angela Merkel received in Germany in 2015. The ironic thing is that at the same time it was the same number of people who rejected her political party and, later on, voted for the right-wing AFD party. The piece aims to question the concepts of citizenship and identity, in the face of the growing refugee crisis due to climate change, armed conflicts, as well as, unequal treatment for migrants according to their provenance.
This project was dedicated to Okwui Enwezor (October 23, 1963, Calabar, Nigeria - March 15, 2019, Munich, Germany).
