2015 AICA Awards

After an unintended delay in the assignation of the 2015 AICA Awards, the International Association of Art Critics, Venezuela Chapter, held the award ceremony to recognize those artists, critics, gallerists and institutions that stood out this year. The event was held at the Galería Ascaso in Caracas. The emotional and sincere recognitions were a predominant part of the event, partly because the persons recognized are pillars of the culture and art in Venezuela, masters who made this edition of the event a very special occasion. The "Master of the Venezuelan Arts" award was given to Alirio Rodríguez, regarded as one of the precursors of New Figuration in Venezuela, whose work has been exhibited in numerous galleries, museums, and salons at the national and international levels. The "AICA Special Award" went to Graziano Gasparini, specially recognized for his work as architect, historian, and researcher of architecture. The "Special Recognition" award was given to Carmen Parra de Villani, for her pioneering research and museographic work and also because of her efforts to promote Venezuelan art. Likewise, Jorge Pizzani, a recipient of many recognitions this year, was granted the "Consecrated Artist" award for his fervent exhibition activity; José Vívenes received the "Young Artist" award and José Antonio Hernández-Diez was recognized for his international projection. The exhibitions recognized were: "Soto. Static Dynamic," for "Best Solo Exhibition," curated by Isabelle Soto and Tomás Mussett; and "Best Exhibition Catalog," designed by Zilah Rojas, with text by María Elena Ramos—an exhibition presented at the Galería Ascaso. The exhibition Venezuelan Ceramic 1955-2008 was recognized as "Best Group Exhibition," presented at Espacio Mercantil, directed by Tahía Rivero and curated by Ernesto Guevara. Likewise, a "Special Recognition" was given to the exhibition titled "The Art of Writing About Art. Artists under the Gaze of Bélgica Rodríguez" for being an important and original exhibition—curated by Mariela Provenzali—that dignified the profession of art criticism through the editorial and curatorial work of Bélgica Rodríguez. The Ateneo in Caracas was recognized for its 85 years of institutional work, a period of time invested in disseminating the arts in Venezuela and defending the freedom and democracy. The Webpage Wikihistoria del Arte Venezolano (Wikistory of Venezuelan Art), kept by the Department of Humanities and Education of the Universidad de los Andes, was recognized with the "Best Book" award for its Digital Encyclopedia. Lastly, Marisol Escobar was remembered in a posthumous tribute as one of the most important artists in Venezuela, for her sculptural work of an international scale. The jury panel for this 2015 edition of the Awards was formed by: Beatríz Sogbe, Perán Erminy, and Carlos Maldonado-Bourgoin.
