Agustín Pérez-Rubio

On May 22, prominent Spanish historian and curator Agustín Pérez-Rubio (Valencia-1972) was appointed the new Artistic Director of the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA). The announcement was made in a press conference offered by the Director of the collection, Eduardo Costantini, at the auditorium of the institution. During the press conference Costantini said the following: "The addition of an Artistic Director responds to an organic and integral view of MALBA. It was a strategic institutional decision aimed at consolidating the future of the Museum and strengthening its ties with the world, through a program that is in tune with the issues and challenges of the 21st Century. In his new post as Artistic Director of MALBA, Pérez-Rubio will be responsible for the collection and any new acquisitions, the exhibition program and the general supervision of the publication programs, as well as the education and cultural extension, film and literature programs. Costantini also informed that the appointment of Agustin Perez-Rubio took into account his "vast academic knowledge and his vision of Latin American and international contemporary art, along with his great leadership skills and institutional trajectory in the management of museum collections and the coordination of work groups. Other aspects taken into consideration were his curatorial and educational experience, as well as his initiatives to implement innovative public programs." "I am honored to arrive in the City of Buenos Aires to be part of this new and important phase of MALBA, a museum that I have watched grow and that has always been a referent, not solely in Latin America but also at the international level. It represents a great challenge but it is also a pleasure," said Pérez-Rubio, who will settle in Buenos Aires on August 1 of this year. Pérez-Rubio served as Director of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC) until February of 2013. From 2003 to 2009 he was Head Curator of that museum and was in charge of its collection and program. Pérez-Rubio is also a member of several committees in museums and artistic institutions and has curated over 70 exhibitions in various national and international institutions, such as the Venice Biennale, the Centre Georges Pompidou, in Paris, and the ICI in New York. MALBA is undergoing an institutional restructuring aimed at the further integration of the museum with the city and the artistic network that expands through Latin America. With this purpose in mind, MALBA is also appointing an Executive Director, who will help Pérez-Rubio lead the Museum into its new direction and a new scientific-artistic committee formed by curators, critics and directors from other institutions who will advise on the direction of the program and new acquisitions.
