The exhibition titled "Adiós Utopía: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950" will remain open at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) until May 29, 2017. Then, on November 11 of 2017, it will be inaugurated at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Conceived by the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), the exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. "Adiós Utopía: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950," is the largest and most important exhibition of Cuban modern and contemporary art exhibited in the United States after the exhibition centered on "Modern Cuban Painters" that was shown in 1944 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. "Adiós Utopía…" includes more than 100 works created by more than fifty Cuban artists that offer a dynamic vision based on the utopian spirit that defines the Cuban Revolution and its transformational aspirations and shaped Cuban art for more than 65 years. The exhibition offers a historic and conceptual view of key moments in the history of Cuba from the 20th to the 21st centuries, covering the idealism that characterized the Cuban Revolution during the Cold War, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its impact on the island to this day. The show offers a fresh take on the manner in which historic events influenced and shaped the nature of the art produced by Cuban artists and conditioned the perception of Cuban modern and contemporary art both in the island and internationally. Most of the exhibition centers on works produced by Cuban artists living on the island but also showcases the work of Cuban artists who immigrated to other places. It is curated by Gerardo Mosquera, René Francisco and Elsa Vega. The exhibition also relied on the expertise of advisors like Olga Viso, Executive Director of the Walker Art Center, and Mari Carmen Ramírez, Wortham Curator of Latin American Art at the MFAH and Director of the Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA).
