Watercolors and Drawings from the Vault, debuts at The Dalí Museum

The Dalí Museum is displaying 25 rarely shown drawings and watercolors from The Dalí's vault within the permanent collection, to complement the current retrospective of oils within the gallery. The temporary display is curated by The Dalí Museum's Chief Curator, Joan Kropf. The Dalí Museum owns over 150 drawings and watercolors by the surrealist master, which periodically rotate to give visitors a continuing retrospective of Salvador Dalí's works. The newly unveiled works range from 1917 to 1968 and highlight Dalí's superior ability to draw in a variety of techniques to illuminate his complex dream imagery. Many of these drawings were a precursor to his final works, providing insight into Dalí's creative process, indicating how he would refine ideas before creating a finished oil painting. The selections are on display for a limited time and demonstrate the varying subjects that interested him at different points in his career, including exquisite pencil drawings of Cadaqués (1917-18), The Nostalgic Echo (1935), the study for Disappearing Image (1939) and Cosmic Contemplation, a large watercolor created in 1951. The artistic gifts of Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) became evident at an early age. With a vivid imagination and consummate skill at drawing, Dalí was especially adept at producing numerous sketches, studies and fully realized drawings during his fertile surrealist period. The works currently on display demonstrate his appreciation for classic drawing, while offering an exclusive glimpse into the development of some of his best-known masterpieces. The Dalí Museum is excited to provide the community an opportunity to view these rarely displayed works. The drawings and watercolors will be displayed through February of 2019.
