The Museo Nacional de Colombia, jointly with the Ministry of Culture, homaging the Colombian conceptual artist with the exhibition "Acción plástica: homenaje a Antonio Caro" one year after his death. The exhibition will be on view until June 26, 2022, in the temporary exhibition hall of the Museum, a space that became a great workshop for collective creation, which appropriates the artistic production methods of Antonio Caro, who marked the development of conceptual art in the country.
Antonio Caro affirmed: "Art needs creativity, but creativity does not need art." This critical stance led him to question conventional notions of artistic creation, arguing that a creative proposal can be constantly repeated, that an original can also borrow images and texts from ancestral, mass, and popular culture, and that the author is not a person but culture.
Juliana Restrepo, director of the Museo Nacional de Colombia, explains that "the idea is that citizens live a creative experience in the Museum, an 'artistic action' that proposes to make versions of Caro's versions, for which some of his works were selected, and a recurring theme in his creative project was highlighted. The way national history insists on forgetting other stories and social subjects."
Curated by Victor Manuel Rodriguez, who points out that "Antonio Caro carried out more creative workshops than works. This tribute recognizes this fact by imagining the Museum as a great collective creation workshop that inspires participants to share the creator's critical concerns and take up his questioning of the art institution and the syntax of oblivion that shapes the national narrative. By bringing unofficial histories to light, Caro shows us the tragic fate of the nation's memory: its impossibility to account for the diversity of its histories and places."
Antonio Caro called his public interventions artistic actions and for this exhibition seven "artistic actions" are proposed: "Homage to Manuel Quintín Lame", "Cabeza de Lleras", "Aquí no cabe el arte", "El imperialismo es un tigre de papel", "Colombia Coca-Cola", "Maíz" and "Defienda su talento".
"Acción plástica: homenaje a Antonio Caro" will also feature the screening of the documentary "HOLA 21", a project by Antonio Caro. These are five conversations around five publications that will be part of the audiovisual programming of ARTBO Weekend on Friday, April 22 at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., Saturday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 24 at 5:00 p.m.
