Aimed at generating a new way for the public to access its art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York created a space on its homepage with 400,000 high-resolution images of emblematic works—some of them never before shown—that are part of its collection. Named "The Collection Online," the objective of this initiative is to allow access to, as well as the downloading of, the images and the information associated with each of the 400,000 works that belong to the encyclopedic collection of the Museum for academic or other non-commercial purposes, without restrictions. The Metropolitan Museum announced that it intends to increase the amount of works available online in the coming months. The institution also announced that some of the images that do not have the required permissions from their creators or are not owned by the Museum will not be available online. Included in these 400,000 images are paintings by Picasso, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Magritte, Pollock and Rauschenberg, among others, and there are also images of sculptures and photographs.
