Abstracción Americana (American Abstraction): Carlos Mérida. Ralli Museum Marbella

The Ralli Museum inaugurated the exhibition "American Abstraction - Carlos Mérida", a temporary exhibition dedicated to the work of one of the pioneers of abstraction art in Latin America. This exhibition dedicated to Carlos Mérida (Guatemala, 1891 - Mexico, 1984) was curated by Silvia Sánchez Ruiz and is composed of works from the series "Un canto al libro sagrado" ("A song to the sacred book"), created in 1978, whose title refers to the Sacred Book of the Popol Vuh. Specifically, the exhibition proposes a journey through the history and cosmogony of the Maya-Quiché lineage.
Mérida was one of the leading figures of Mexican abstract art in the early twentieth century ; his artistic proposal is based on the fusion of pre-Columbian figurative elements with modern abstract language. Therefore, his art has been read as one that managed to propose a modern language without leaving aside an agenda of national and continental identity. Mérida's artistic production is influenced by his initial training in music, his Mayan-Quiché heritage, and contact with European avant-garde art, especially cubism, surrealism, and abstract art.
"American Abstraction - Carlos Mérida" will be on view through October 26, 2024, at the Museo Ralli Marbella, Málaga.
