A Thousand Doors

An innovative exhibition by Greek and international artists opens at the Gennadius Library, in Athens, from May 4 to June 30. Organized by NEON, an institution dedicated to contemporary culture, the exhibition is curated by Iwona Blazwick, director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Under the title A Thousand Doors, the project was inspired by the history, the collections and the spaces of the Gennadius Library and it was envisioned to complement it. The show covers the entire area of the library, including the interior spaces, as well as the outdoor gardens. It consists of a selection of works in several artistic disciplines including video and sound and sculptural installations, among others. A Thousand Doors is inspired in the short story by Jorge Luis Borges titled The Library of Babel. The show's title is perfectly in line with the library, as a place for rare books, and with the Academy as the main sponsor of archeological research, taking into account that the themes in the book, in the libraries and the artifacts from the past, are somehow associated with the works exhibited. The artists whose work is part of the exhibition range from innovative artists like Hanna Höch, to prominent contemporary artists like Isa Genzken and Janis Kounellis, along with young talent like Adrián Villar-Rojas, Paki Vlassopoulou and Shuruq Harb. The library is pleased to participate in this joint project aimed at generating a dialog surrounding its relationship with contemporary art and its responsibility with contemporary discussions as they pertain to the meaning and use of elements from the past and the ways in which to document it.
