Fifth Two-dimensional Art Salon

In the month of November the Fifth Two-Dimensional Art Salon of the Fundación Gilberto Alzate Avedaño opened its doors in Bogota, Colombia. The Two-Dimensional Salon is a biennial event that this year had the participation of 501 artists of which 53 were chosen by the jury formed by Mariana Varela, Alberto Baraya, and Mario Opazo. According to the foundation's report, "aside from conforming to the conditions and guidelines of the call, the artists selected convey strong creative energies through their works and also generate meaningful reflections on the two-dimensionality and surrounding reality that they question or analyze." Since its inauguration in 2002, the Two-Dimensional Salon opened its doors to present new proposals and dialogues centered on the presence of two-dimensionality in contemporary art, in order to propose a dialectic between the more "traditional" artistic creations and the contemporary questions and/or preoccupations in the art of today¿both formal and conceptual. The Salon awarded the First Prize to Brayan Méndez-Cortés, Second Prize to Luis Felipe Barreiro, as well as several Honourable Mentions to the following artists: Lorena Espitia, Sebastián Fierro, David Mahecha, Bernardo Montoya, María Leguízamo, Guillermo Londoño, Mateo Pérez, Marta Rivero, and Orlando Rojas. The awarded works will become part of, and enrich, the art collection of the Fundación Gilberto Alzate Avedaño; a collection that includes works by some of the most important Colombian artists of the last decade.
