54th International Congress of Art Critics

The 54th International Congress of Art Critics, organized annually by the International Association of Art Critics - AICA, will be held in November 2022.
The 54th edition of the Congress is managed and organized by the Argentine Association of Art Critics -AACA-, the International Association of Art Critics of Chile, and the collaboration of AICA International. The event will be held from November 13 to 15 in Valparaiso (Chile) and from 16 to 19 in Buenos Aires (Argentina). The Congress will be held in person with the option of online presentations for accepted papers.
The call for art critics, artists, and writers to send their papers on the theme proposed for this edition is currently open until August 1.
The theme of the 54th Congress will be "What we talk about when we talk about criticism in the 21st century". As a symbolic expression of the social world, today's art demands a committed reflection in the face of this time challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic that not only affects the health that scourges the whole world but also from the outbursts originating from the inequalities and latent crises that shake the most fragile societies. This crossroads provoked situations of confinement that impacted institutional agendas, crumbled museum programming, exposed the digital divide, and brought new challenges to the art world. At the same time, the demonstrations of discontent that took to the streets in some countries generated public actions and practices that slipped into the symbolic-expressive sphere reserved for artistic practices. The war in Europe compounded this pandemic situation. The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 reactivates the concern for nuclear weapons and stirs up the specter of the third world war. The horror that war generates, beyond death and destruction, is made visible in the drama of millions of refugees fleeing the conflict zone.
In this context, it is essential to reflect, review and discuss current issues in criticism and curatorship. Multiple points of view and approaches are produced in the artistic and criticism fields. The thematic axes proposed are:
-Art institutions and museums in the new virtual horizon.
-Educational curatorship: from experience in the gallery to the screen.
-Biennials and exhibitions. Reflections on the new post-pandemic context.
-New audiences and strategies to reverse the digital divide.
-Art criticism in the face of differences, ethnic-racial and gender discrimination.
-Art and criticism in the face of the historical trauma caused by the health emergency, the war context, and migrations.
-Memories of authoritarian processes, social conflicts, and revolts.
-Art and activism: art, politics, and citizenship.
