50th Anniversary of the Count of Laguillas Collection

This year the Count of Lagunillas Collection, one of the most important collections of its type in America, and which forms part of the assets of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, reaches its 50th anniversary. The pieces were brought together by the Cuban collector Joaquin Guma Herrera, Count of Lagunillas, who decided to donate them to the Museum in 1956. The collection includes around 600 exponents of the three principal ancient cultures: Egypt, Greece and Rome. To pay homage to the collection and the collector, and for reaching the fifth anniversary since the reopening of the Museum after great reparation, the institution arranged a conference that will be celebrated on July 17th, 18th and 19th in the theatre of the Cuban art building. The analyses will be centered in themes that refer to the collection and to other similar themes of ancient archaeology, or the study of specific pieces, focusing on aspects such as conservation, restoration, museography, investigative results, as well as the promotion of this specific sphere. Multiple activities will take place until September as part of the celebrations, which will include monthly commentaries on relevant works, a book exhibition, photos and documents of the collector and an exhibition of pastiches in the world of archeology.
