The Centro de Documentación of the Centro Cultural La Moneda announces its call for participation in the 4th Essay Competition Centered on the Visual Arts in Chile from the 1970s and 1980s—from the perspective of various possible artistic fields and cultural disciplines. Candidates can submit monographic, thematic, critical and/or interdisciplinary essays that address the practices and discourses of the visual arts from those two decades.
The works may center not solely on the realm of the visual arts—sculpture, photography, engraving, installation, performance, painting, and video—but also on the possible intersections between the disciplines and the fields of music, filmmaking, literature, dance and new media, and the connections established with history, philosophy, art criticism, history, and art theory, as well as cultural studies such as gender, cultural administration, publics and education, amongo other.
The call is open to researchers or research teams—with no more than three researchers per team—whether these are students or professionals; Chilean or foreigners working in the visual arts fields, art theory, history, aesthetics, literature, sociology and other social sciences that are methodologically within the thematic of the competition.
Organizers will only award research essays that contribute to the study of the contemporary visual arts in Chile from the 1970s and 1980s. These must, in part, reference bibliographic texts and documents from the audiovisual archives of the Cedoc Artes Visuales. Research essays that do no included references from the aforementioned sources with not be considered for the call.
The essays must be submitted in Spanish and cannot be under 8,000 or over 10,000 words. This includes any footnotes and an abstract that does not exceed 200 words—it must be inserted directly below the title of the essay.
This extension does not include the bibliographic list that should be incorporated at the end of the essay. Both the bibliography and the footnotes must be adjusted to the style format specified in page 6, within the rules and requirements of the competition.
The images contained in the essay must include title, author, and the year they were created.
Candidates may submit one (1) essay per author, or one (1) essay per group of authors, although the name of one person responsible must be established.
The essay must be submitted in a CD using Word—letter size format, Times New Roman font, size 12—with a 1.5 line spacing and having every page numbered. Candidates must submit three printed copies, each spiral-bind or in a folder but ensuring that the pages are tied together. The cover must indicate:
Name of the competition: Cuarto Concurso de Investigación CeDoc Artes Visuales "Prácticas y Discursos en las Artes Visuales de los '70 y '80 en Chile (4th CeDoc Visual Arts Competition "Practices and Discourses in the Visual Arts from the 1970s and 1980s in Chile).
Essay title, name of the author or person responsible for the presentation of the essay.
Each participant or group of participants must accompany the copies of their essays with an application form requested by email to cedocartes@centroculturallamoneda.cl, along with the CV of the essay author or authors CV.
The copies of the essay must be presented to Horacio Valdés at the Centro de Documentación de las Artes Visuales, located at Centro de Documentación de las Artes Visuales; Monday to Friday, from 9:30 to 17:30. The deadline to receive all entries is August 7 of this year.
