38th Brazilian Art Panorama Mil graus (A Thousand Degrees) Museum of Modern Art (MAM)

The emphasis of this edition is plurality. There are 34 artists from 16 Brazilian states, reflecting a diversity of generations, experiences, and practices ranging from the use of organic materials and traditional media to experimentation with new technologies and digital languages. Rejecting totalizing visions, the curators bet on the complexity and multiplicity inherent to Brazil, recognizing the impossibility of capturing the country's cultural immensity in a single show. The proposal is to create dialogues between different matrixes of thought and artistic practices, promoting encounters that transcend the linearity of time and space. In this articulation, there is a sense of urgency and a need to address the present with intensity, recognizing in art a field of energy that reflects and generates transformations.
Mil graus (A Thousand Degrees), on view from October 2024 to January 2025, is curated by Germano Dushá and Thiago de Paula Souza, with Ariana Nuala as assistant curator.
The title 1000 degrees, which evokes a maximum temperature, metaphorizes the molecular agitation capable of melting any material, proposing an analogy with the disruptive power of art. The selected works, which include spontaneous practices linked to traditional knowledge, as well as processes involving new technologies and artificial materials, challenge the viewer to rethink the limits of art and its relationship with the world. “A Thousand Degrees” does not seek simple representation but the creation of a space where art is a field of combustion, capable of transforming not only matter but also the soul and thought.
