29th Bienal de São Paulo

Venue:
Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo, Parque do Ibirapuera, Portão 3 São Paulo/SP Brazil Dates: Sep 25 - Dec 12, 2010 The Bienal de São Paulo is pleased to announce its 29th edition, which will take place between the 25th of September and 12th of December 2010 at the Bienal Pavilion. Based on the idea that art and politics have reached a level of almost non-distinction, being therefore urgent to emphasize art from other realms of knowledge, the exhibition, entitled "There is always a cup of sea to sail in," is a tribute to the role of art in current times, both in Brazil and abroad. Presenting the work of 159 artists from several countries, this edition aims to be a celebration of art making itself, while asserting art¿s own responsibility towards a critical reflection on the world. Furthermore, the 29th Bienal aims to engage the visitor in this discussion through the construction of 6 Terreiros, platforms with a variety of functions whose name is taken from popular Brazilian culture. Displayed along the building, they were designed to perform as "dialogue hubs," inviting the spectators to connect in debates while also offering them a comfortable environment to rest and reflect. In addition, the Terreiros will offer a rich program of videos, music, dance, theatre and lectures, where visitors will be able to share their experiences and dynamically take part in activities. Therefore, the curatorial project for the 29th Bienal does not exhaust itself in the presentation of an articulated set of works of art, even though this is clearly its core and main purpose. From the programming of each of the Terreiros, many questions will be raised and discussed, making clear the deep and diverse presence of art in life. Between a cup of sea to sail in and a piece of land on which to gather, art asserts its politics. In this edition, a major concern has been given to develop an innovative educational project, strictly integrated within the curatorial concept. Educational activities have been happening since February, such as guided tours, studio visits, educator training, workshops and seminars, reaching different audiences through a variety of repertoires. This attitude aims to encourage dialogue and the personal experience of each one of the visitors with the artworks.
