25 YearsCódice Galería de Arte Contemporáneo

In November, 1991, Códice Galería de Arte Contemporáneo was founded by Juanita Bermúdez in Managua, Nicaragua, in response to the lack of promotion felt by Nicaraguan artists after the period of the Sandinista Revolution, which encouraged the dissemination of culture and art in Nicaragua during the 1980s. In 1999, the gallery space was revamped and expanded, creating in this manner a cultural venue that not only promotes and commercializes Nicaraguan visual arts, but also its artists—particularly the ceramic works from San Juan de Oriente and its most prominent representatives, Gregorio Bracamonte and Helio Gutiérrez—and other cultural manifestations, like literature and music, created in the country. This coming May 4, Códice Galería de Art Contemporáneo will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a group exhibition by artists that the gallery has represented since the beginning: Orlando Sobalvarro (1943-2009), Luis Urbina (1937-2005), Leonel Vanegas (1942-1989), César Izquierdo (1937-2015), and Arnoldo Guillén, members of the Praxis Group; Fernando Saravia (1924-2009), Armando Morales (1927-2011), Carlos Montenegro (1942-2014), Ilse Ortiz, Claudia Fuentes, Hugo Palma-Ibarra, Ramiro Lacayo-Deshon, Patricia Belli, Raúl Quintanilla, Salvador Castillo, Denis Núñez, Norlan Santana, and Javier Valle-Pérez. The work by Códice Galería de Arte Contemporáneo has been an important factor in the development of the Nicaraguan art from the second half of the 20th Century. It has not only represented and disseminated the work of great masters, but has also fostered new values born during the 1950s. At the same time, the institution has published art publications centered on the work by masters Fernando Saravia and Orlando Sobalvarro, four numbers of the Cuadernos de la Plástica Nicaragüense, between 1992 and 1999. It has welcomed and supported the production of works by artists that as recently as 1991 began to apply contemporary languages, after the return to the country of promoters, Patricia Belli and Raúl Quintanilla.
