2012 Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Travel Award

Central America and the Caribbean

The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and the Independent Curators International (ICI) announce the 2012 Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean. A yearly event, this award will support one contemporary art curator from anywhere in the world who wishes to travel to Central America and the Caribbean with the objective of doing research on artistic and cultural activities. Aimed at generating new collaborations between artists, curators, museums, cultural centers, and/or art collections in the region, the award will offer curatorial residencies as well as studio and research visits. The residencies may last anywhere between 3 weeks to up to 3 months, and they will take place between March and September of 2012. The grant will cover costs of up to 10,000 (Translator: Is it USD? Thanks). The call is open to both independent curators and curators affiliated to institutions. Applications from established and emerging curators¿must have at least three years of professional experience¿will also be considered. The award will support one or several travels to places in Central America and the Caribbean. For its first edition, the award will be granted in honor of curator Virginia Pérez-Ratton, who was founder of the TEOR / éTica art space, library, and foundation, as well as director of the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo in Costa Rica. The curatorial project may center on travels to any of the following countries: ¿ Central America: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama ¿ Caribbean: The Antilles, The Bahamas, Colombia (Caribbean region), as well as Turks and Caicos Islands. The winning candidate will be chosen by a jury of professionals in the field who live in, or have extensive knowledge of, the region. In addition, the jury will also invite another curator from the list of finalist for a 2 to 4 week residency at TEOR / éTica. This opportunity is designed to introduce curators to the contemporary art scene of Costa Rica through studio visits, encounters with other arts professionals and exposure to temporal exhibitions.
