20 years

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Barranquilla (MAMB) celebrates its twentieth anniversary with the motto "art within everyone's reach." During the 1960s the management team at the Centro Artístico in Barranquilla, along with members of the group LA Cueva, organized the Inter-American Art Biennials with the support of the OAS. From this initiative emerged a collection of Latin American art that would become part of the MAMB's permanent collection, which currently includes more than 350 works. In 1974, the first museum dedicated to the conservation and promotion of Modern Art in Barranquilla is officially inaugurated. It organized national exhibitions, with the collaboration of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogota and, internationally, with the support of the British Council; and the 1979 Avant-Garde Festival. In 1994, the Fundación Festival de Arte de Barranquilla was founded with the mission of fostering and disseminating cultural manifestations in the city and the department. Two years later, the foundation's statutes are reformed and the institution is renamed "Fundación Museo de Arte Moderno de Barranquilla." That same year it was welcomed into the Colombian Association of Museum, affiliated to the United Nation's International Council of Museums (ICOM). This 20 year history commenced on December 6, 1996, when the Fundación Museo de Arte Moderno de Barranquilla began its work at the old customs building. The space in the museum eventually became insufficient for the activities and services offered and for housing its growing collection. This led to the search for a new place that resulted in the relocation to its current address, a building lent under a commodatum agreement by the Terpel, a private company in 2004. To mark these 20 years of intense work and dedication, on September 6 the Museo started the celebratory events that will continue through 2017 with the inauguration of "20 Years, 20 Names," an exhibition that narrates the history of the museum and shows works by 20 artists from the collection. The show is supported by texts, photographs, and catalogs that complement the curatorial script. Also noteworthy of mention is the educational work that the museum offers within the exhibition through its program titled "The MAMB: A School's Classroom." It is a program that has been widely recognized at the national level as one of the most meaningful experiences in the country. As part of the celebrations, by the end of 2017 the museum will open a modern space designed by prominent architect Giancarlo Mazzanti. Its construction will offer more than 3,000 square meters of space located at the parquet Cultural del Caribe complex and is supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Government of Atlántico, and the government of Barranquilla. The artists participating in the "20 Years, 20 Names" exhibition are: Alejandro Obregón, Alfonso Suárez, Álvaro Barrios, Antonio Caro, Beatriz González, Bernardo Salcedo, Edgar Negret, Eduardo Ramírez-Villamizar, El Sindicato, Enrique Grau, Feliza Bursztyn, Fernando Botero, Luis Caballero, Manuel Hernández, Miguel Ángel Rojas, Nereo López, Norman Mejía, Oscar Muñoz, Pedro Alcántara, and Santiago Cárdenas.
