The Group Los Carpinteros Disbands

After 26 years of collaborative work, the group Los Carpinteros breaks up for good. The group was formed during the 1990s after Alexandre Arrechea, Dagoberto Rodríguez and Marco Castillo met at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), in Havana, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. During this period, the members of the group developed a friendship that led to the establishment of Los Carpinteros. In 2003, Alexandre Arrechea decided to leave the group in search of a new direction and since then he has been developing a solid career on his own. After his departure, Los Carpinteros continued as a duo and gradually earned global recognition for their work and through participation in several exhibitions and biennials. Some of the works created by the group are exhibited in important museums. Now, in 2018, the group dissolves definitively, bringing all previously planned commitments to a close and ceasing to create any new works under the signature of Los Carpinteros. While this marks the end of the group, Rodríguez and Castillo are still willing to participate by mutual accord in any future exhibitions of the work already produced together (between 2003 and 2018), thus keeping intact any considerations regarding their collective work and legacy. The exhibition of works created by the group before 2003 will also require the consent of Alexandre Arrechea. In an official announcement Marco Castillo said, "Through the years with Los Carpinteros, my family, friends, and a long list of people and institutions have helped, encouraged, and supported me both in Cuba and around the world. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to each and everyone of them," and added, "I will continue the explorations and inquiries that have guided my creative efforts to this day. Full of gratitude for the past years, I now look forward with optimism to the next chapter of my career developing an individual artistic practice."
