The SUR Biennial, curated by Ronald López -executive director of Outpost Gallery- and co-founded by artist and professor Robert Miller -director of the Rio Hondo College gallery-, was held for the first time in the city of Los Angeles, California, between October 20th and November 18th. The theme for this edition was Assimilation, Adaptation, Acculturation, centering on art that deals with issues from south of the US/Mexico border. The biennial, presented in the neighborhoods of Whittier and Cerritos -a mostly Latino part of the city that is not usually among the favorites for large-scale art exhibitions-, focused on the work of a number of local artists influenced by Mexican, Central American, and South American culture. The program for this year incorporated unique, innovative proposals that sought to establish a dialog with the audience, intended to achieve a shift in the perception of the issues of assimilation, adaptation, and acculturation. The Biennial reinforced the importance of Los Angeles as an epicenter for art and art criticism today. Presenting time-based and ephemeral works, performance art, installations, new media, and, in general, art that engages the audience, it created an environment where people were encouraged to interrogate themselves about topics such as, What is, and how, the Latino? How and how much does the Latino adapt and/or transforms abroad? Is a sustainable balance possible when one must adapt and assimilate to a different culture? In addition to the various exhibitions, the program included several discussions for both students and the general public, giving the biennial a pedagogical aspect. Among the local artists who participated were Luciana Abait (Argentina), Raul Baltazar (Mexico), Castillo (Colombia), Karla Díaz (Mexico), Martín Durazo (Mexico/USA), Vidal Herrera (Mexico/USA), Ichiro Irie (Japan), Elana Mann (USA), MobileMuralLab (Mexico/USA), Marcus Kuiland-Nazario (Puerto Rico), and the performance collective formed by Vincent Ramos (Mexico/USA), Liz López (Mexico) and Los Roor.
