The 21st Paiz Art Biennial, "Untitled (Beyond)," will take place in Guatemala under the curatorship of Gerardo Mosquera, a prominent Havana and Madrid based independent curator, art critic, historian and writer with a long professional trajectory. The curatorial team will also include Maya Juracán and Laura Wellen, along with Esperanza Leon, an education curator. For this 21st edition of the Paiz Art Biennial, Mosquera will focus on new possibilities that help to project the event and promote Guatemalan art internationally. According to the head curator: "The idea is to offer a biennial that is more inclusive, contextual, rhizomatic, decentralized in space and time and that offers greater communication with the public. In this manner, the Paiz Art Biennial will consist of a constellation of activities all over Guatemala City, across the country, and even beyond its borders, in collaboration with several artists' spaces, institutions, events, and other agents. The event will also reach beyond the art circuits. The notion of 'beyond' will become the Biennial's central driving force." The title of this edition of the Biennial, "Untitled (Beyond)," conveys the intention of placing less emphasis on the theme of the Paiz Art Biennial in favor of bringing its methodology to the forefront. To a great extent, the theme will be the event's methodology itself. Thus, the content of the Biennial will not be built through the discussion of a particular issue, but through an action model. In considering the panorama of the next Paiz Art Biennial, Mosquera explained, "My project explores another direction as a reaction to this trend, while at the same time—and this is the most important thing—it proposes a biennial model that I believe is appropriate for the situation in Guatemala and the evolution of the biennial as a living event." Gerardo Mosquera is an advisor of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City, and of several other cultural institutions. He is also a board member of several magazines and international art centers. He has organized other biennials and numerous international exhibitions. Mosquera has published several books and more than 600 articles for publications in a large number of countries.
