Sculptures from the Colección MAC

As part of the program of collaboration between the Fundación Itaú and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC) of the Universidad de Chile, the Espacio Suecia 21 exhibits from June 23 to September 21 six figurative sculptures from the Colección MAC that will be included in its catalogue raisonné Project. This exhibition is the second of four curatorships organized through the collaborative efforts between the Fundación Itaú and the MAC, which are part of the catalogue raisonné Project, a research conducted since 2012 with the goal of recording, systematizing and documenting over 250 works from the Colección MAC. Thanks to this research, the history behind many of the valuable works by Chilean and international artists can now be known in depth, cross referenced and analyzed. The Colección MAC includes works by Abelardo Araya (1896-1983), Carlos Canut de Bon (1877-1945), Marta Colvin (1907-1995), Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), Laura Rodig (1901 -1972) and Samuel Román (1907-1990), among other artists. These works are now on display in order to offer a survey of the formal and material diversity of Chilean sculpture during the first half of the twentieth century; a period that in Chile was characterized by the complex and sometimes contradictory influence of the modern art and the avant-garde artistic currents. These are portraits of specific individuals, some of them linked to the authors and to Chilean art, like the portraits of painter Aristodemus Lattanzi and poet Gabriela Mistral. Also included in this series is the bronze portrait of Chilean painter Herminia Arrate by the important US-Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi. These busts showcase the diverse forms in which their authors assimilated the languages of modern art and the formal direction that their sculptural works took. The grand exhibition "Catalogue Raisonné" will open in October of this year and will occupy the entire space of the MAC Parque Forestal. This exhibition is presented as a unique opportunity to show the museum's patrimony to the general public, with an exhibition that consists of works enriched by the thorough research that surrounds each of them. A complementary educational program will be offered to connect the local and regional public with the Colección MAC. The joint initiative between the MAC and the Fundación Itaú will allow the presentation of works from the Colección MAC to a wide audience throughout 2015. This important collaboration is another achievement in the long partnership between the two institutions that began in 2007 with the presentation of the successful 27th Selection of the São Paulo Biennial titled "How to Live Together" (2007), and continued in recent years with the exhibitions "Lily Garafulic.100 Years. A Double Look" (2014); "Joseph Beuys. Works 1955-1985" (2014); and "Marcel Duchamp, 'Don't forget.' A Game of Chess with Man Ray and Salvador Dalí" (2014), among many other exhibitions.
