Ordinary/Extraordinary: The demystification of art or the will to change things. 20th Paiz Art Biennial

The Paiz Art Biennial will be held from June 2nd through July 2nd in a variety of sites in Guatemala City's historic downtown. This edition of the Biennial will emphasize participatory works, as well as art connected to everyday life and the art/life relationship, all under the general title of Ordinary/Extraordinary: The demystification of art or the will to change things. The Paiz Art Biennial's curatorial team is headed by Alma Ruíz, the first Guatemalan curator to helm the event, and includes Alexia Tala as co-curator and editorial curator. The exhibition spaces will be located in a Historic Downtown circuit that includes Casa Ibargüen, the Centro Cultural Municipal, the Casa Municipal (formerly the Sánchez & De Guise Printing House), Casa de la Esquina, Centro Cultural de España, and ArteCentro Paiz and annexes. The Guatemalan artists selected to participate in this edition of the Biennial are Esvin Alarcón Lam, Marilyn Boror, María Alejandra González, Juan Maurilio Mendoza, David Pérez Karmadavis, Sergio Valencia Salazar and the Proyecto Sitio/Seña collective. Their work will dialogue with proposals by 25 artists from across Latin America, Asia, and Europe. The Biennial will be summarized in a bilingual catalog, and in order to promote the participation of a variety of audiences, the event will feature a pedagogical guide for children and adolescents, intended to bring them closer to the arts, engage their sensibility, and introduce them to the analysis of the discipline. Since its first edition, in 1978, the purpose of the Paiz Art Biennial has been to expand the public's engagement with exhibition spaces, thus decentralizing the arts.
