National Visual Arts Prize

Caja de Extremadura, through its Obra Social, sponsors the Caja de Extremadura National Visual Arts Prize-OBRA ABIERTA 2012. The Call is open to all national and international artists.

Each participant may submit a single original work of his/her authorship, in any of the following disciplines: a) painting and its expansion, b) sculpture, c) photography, and d) digital art, video, performance and artistic intervention.

Candidates are free to choose any theme for their works. The proposals must be original and never before published, exhibited, or entered in any other competition. They must possess the technical requirements of the modality for which they were entered to compete in:

a) Painting: When dimensions and support allow it, the works should be submitted with a protective strip that measures 2 to 3 cm thick. In any case, the work must be somehow protected until returned to the candidate, in order to avoid any shipping and handling damages.

b) Sculpture: Candidates are free to choose the format and materials for their projects as long as the final work can be shipped and handled without risking any damage. The sculptures must be conceived to be erected in public spaces—something recommended by the jury panel—although Obra Social of Caja Extremadura reserves the right to decide on the space the work should occupy.

c) Photography: Candidates are free to choose the format, technique, and support for their works. Images must be submitted without a picture frame glass. Nonetheless, the printed images must be adequately packaged to avoid any shipping and handling damage.

d) Digital Art, Videos, Performances: Any digital supports that facilitates the appreciation, evaluation, analysis, and storage of the work will be accepted.

The deadline to submit all proposals is October 1, 2012. Candidates must enter their applications at the event's homepage: www.tumejorobra.es/obraabierta2012. For the modalities of Painting and Photography, the application must be accompanied by a digital jpeg image of the work, 500 kb to 1.5 Mb in size. Sculpture proposals must include 3 digital jpeg images—500 kb to 1.5 Mb in size—that can effectively describe the configuration of the work. A URL address must be included for the modality of Digital Art, Videos, Performances. Candidates must also include with their applications the following: a Word document—500 characters or less—with the information label of the work and directions on how to mount it; the artist's C.V. that does not exceed 2,000 characters; and economic cost of the work.

Once the works have been selected, Obra Social of Caja de Extremadura will contact the chosen artists and ask them to submit—in a period that does not exceed 7 days—the original works for the exhibition.

The Prize consists of a purse of 15,000.00 euros for the winning work. The jury will publicly announce the winner on November 16, 2012.
