Eduardo Chillida Sculpture Stolen

On Wednesday, February 29th, 2012, between 3:15 and 7:25 pm, Gnomon II, a sculpture by Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida, was stolen in Cologne. The sculpture was taken from a gallery in the German city, where a temporary exhibition is being held through March 31st in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of the Basque artist. Gnomon II, made in iron, measures 17.5 x 23 x 26 cm, weighs 15 kg, and belongs to a private collector, who had loaned it for the show. The gallery offers a ¿5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery o f the sculpture. Investigators speculate that the culprits could be two suspect individuals who entered the gallery wearing winter jackets, which could have been used to camouflage the object as they made their exit. According to the gallery, that afternoon there were only eight visitors. The space doesn't have security cameras and its doors remain closed during visiting hours. Visitors must announce themselves to be allowed in.
