Artist Residencies Educational Program

Located off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, Fogo Island Arts supports artists, curators, filmmakers, writers and designers from all over the world through its programs for arts research and production. Among these programs are artist residencies, exhibitions, and publications, as well as Fogo Island Dialogues, a series of events fostering critical thought held in the island and other sites. The initiatives of this arts organization are part of a business model based in the concept of social entrepreneurship that supports the economic viability of the island and its growth as a tourist destination.

For its 2013-14 residencies, Fogo Island Arts is seeking proposals from art professionals for projects to be presented within the context of the organization's Education Program. The program welcomes proposals from curators, artists, designers, and academics committed to practices contextualized to the level of community-based work.

Submitted proposals must take into account the specifics of Fogo Island Arts' programs: they must incorporate the fact that the institution is located in a small, mostly rural island and functions as an agency of the Shorefast Foundation, an official Canadian charity devoted to the cultural and economic prosperity of the inhabitants of Fogo Island and the Change Islands.

To apply, send a written proposal that includes a brief description of the work to be developed (500 words maximum). Attach a CV, two recommendation letters from professionals in the applicant's field, and, depending on the proposal, JPEG images in a disk with the most complete possible technical card, a DVD for film projects, or three examples of published material (20 pages maximum).

The application deadline is May 31st for residencies starting September 1st, 2013. All application documents must be sent by regular mail to the address below, postmarked no later then May 31st. Please do not send originals; materials will not be returned.

Fogo Island Arts Artists residencies give artists and intellectuals in a wide range of fields the opportunity to live and work in the island for a period between three to six months. Program participants live in historic-landmark houses; four studios designed by architect Todd Saunders are put at the disposal of artists whose project requires them. The studios are located in different parts of the island and, along with the historic-landmark houses, generate a dynamic that connects program participants with the everyday life of local communities.
