Abrahadabra, el ritual de lo habitual

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Bogotá is presenting, through August 30th, Abrahadabra, el ritual de lo habitual, an exhibition featuring the work of 20 artists from Venezuela, Brazil, Germany, and Colombia. Curated by Juan David Quintero and Santiago Rodríguez, Abrahadabra, el ritual de lo habitual focuses on the superstitious, supernatural, and mystical side of the human experience, and includes expressions of the artists' vision in a variety of techniques, including painting, video, and photography. Juan David Quintero, one of the show's curators and also a staff curator at MAC, says that "ritual has always been used to connect images, sounds, and objects to the human universe in a variety of ways, but especially to provide access to our desires, from the most anodyne and self-evident to the most mysterious and hidden." For the show's curators, rituals play many roles, including "the veneration of deities, driving back negative or malignant forces, memorializing special events, connecting with beings no longer inhabiting the material world, controlling the body and sexual pleasure, and even raising the dead. In this way, Magic and its processes, just like the arts, transform, shift, and operate on the world through symbols, and reach their fullest power in the realm of the everyday." The artists featured in the show are: Luiza Prado (Brazil), Fabio Stachi (Brazil), Edouard Fraipont (Brazil), Verónica Giraldo (Colombia), David Gómez (Colombia), Sandra Rengifo (Colombia), Pablo Adarme (Colombia), María Lucía Díaz (Colombia), Alicia Caldera (Venezuela), Iván Chacón (Colombia), Velma Babic (Germany), Adriana Marmorek (Colombia), Leticia Zica (Brazil), Ladyzunga (Colombia), Ándres Moreno Hoffmann (Colombia), Edinson Quiñonez (Colombia), Sebastián Bejarano (Colombia), Karen Aune (Brazil), Leo Carreño (Colombia), and Germán Sanchez (Colombia).
