The Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC) in San José, Costa Rica, opens its call for the 2013 "Inquieta Imagen" Competition aimed at encouraging the production of contemporary and experimental artistic proposals created in new media. The event has gradually expanded its coverage in terms of languages and resources of participation—digital arts including video installations, digital photography, video games, interactive works, and online works.
For its seventh edition, this competition proposes a Central American and the Caribbean call with new proposals inserted into a local context for regional projection. The MADC will design an exhibition based on the proposals selected by an international jury. The goal is to create a space for dialogue that reflects on pertinence, relevance and impact of new technologies and audiovisual media in contemporary art.
The call is open to individuals or groups of artists born in, or residents of, any Central American country, Cuba, Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. Candidates must submit works that are directly connected to the visual arts and that deal with digital experimentation and the use of new technologies—digital photography, video games, interactive works, projections, video installations, internet projects, mobile devices, low tech and poor image, among others.
Participants may submit up to two works per author or authors, created between 2012 and 2013. The proposals must have all of their elements resolved including the technical, logistical and security ones. Proposals missing any of these elements will be rejected. The MADC will not cover transportation, shipping, production or execution costs.
Authors must submit a CV under two pages long that includes their name and last names, year of birth, copy of ID—government issued photo ID or passport—telephone number, email and home address. Each proposal must include: title, year of creation, and a brief presentation text under 500 words long.
Candidates must complete the application form. The proposals will be submitted digitally and not physically during the first stage of the competition—the digital proposals as such will not be returned and they will become part of the MADC's archives. The museum pledges to guard them as it sees fit, to use them discretionarily and to respect their authorships.
The deadline to submit all proposals is September 27, 2013. Mailed proposals must be postmarked no later than the aforementioned date and must be submitted in a digital format along with the required information and the application form. Videos will only be accepted in DVDs or CD ROMs, in a digital format under 15 minutes long. The two-dimensional works must not exceed two meters long by two meters high.
Proposals must be presented inside a sealed manila envelope labeled Inquieta Imagen 2013, at the reception desk of the MADC—formerly FANAL—from Monday to Friday between 9 am and five pm, or sent to the following mail address:
Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo
Apdo. 13391 San José, Costa Rica
Artists will be informed by email whether or not they were selected. The event will grant a single prize and two honorable mentions during the exhibition's inaugural event. A certificate of participation will be given to every artist that participated in the competition.
The museum will present an exhibition that will be inaugurated on November 21, 2013. It will remain open to the public until February of 2014.
